What You Will Need

fruit supplies

  • Watermelon
  • Cantaloupe
  • Grape fruit
  • Peach
  • Green Grapes
  • Strawberries

foil pacifier and toothpicks

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Tooth Picks
  • (1) Pacifier
  • Marker to draw cut lines
  • Knife to cut and carve fruits

You may substitute other fruits in place of the grapes, cantaloupe and strawberries
if desired.

Step 1 - Preparation

Rinse grapes, strawberries or other fruits as needed.
De-stem grapes and place into separate large mixing bowl along with strawberries
or other rinsed fruits.

draw shape on watermelon

Using a marker, draw your desired pattern onto the top of the water melon.
This will be the cut line used to create the opening for your buggy.
This can be as simple or creative as you’d like.

Step 2 - Form The Fruit Buggy

Using your knife, cut along your drawn lines. Carefully remove top/cutout piece and set aside. Do not discard as you will use this piece later.

Much like carving a pumpkin, hallow out the inside of the watermelon and save
the contents.

Tip: We will be putting some of the watermelon back into the finished buggy later. Since there will be an over abundance of melon, it might be a good idea to create a separate fruit bowl to take with to the shower. This way you can re-fill your buggy once guests start eating.

Using aluminum foil, line the inside of the hollowed out melon.

cut watermelon

Chop strawberries, grapes or other fruits to desired sizes.

IMPORTANT!
(Do not chop grapefruit and peach,
these are used for separate steps)

Grapes can be left whole or chopped depending on your preference.
Also include some of the watermelon pieces.

Place all chopped fruit into a side bowl and mix together.

Step 3 - Make The Baby

This is when you can get creative! There are many options you can use to create the baby’s head. You could use a lemon and draw a baby face on it or use a peach like we did. If you’re using the peach follow this step.

Carefully shave skin off peach and carve 2 holes that will form eye sockets.

Cut another hole to form mouth.

Take one grape and cut in half. Place one half of grape in each eye socket.
You may choose to use a small piece of tooth pick behind the grape to hold in place.

Put pacifier in mouth.

Other accessories can be included in addition such as hats, bows or bibs etc.

Fill the watermelon with the mixed fruit from separate bowl and place head at top of buggy.

Step 4 - Wheels and Handle

Cut grapefruit into slices, about 1/4 inch thick. You will need a total of 4 wheels.

wheel with cap

Cut (4) small pieces of watermelon rind to act as caps for wheels. This will help hold the wheels in place.

Wheels can be made from other fruits if you desire.
Other ideas include kiwi and orange to name a few.

Using original watermelon top you removed in the first step, cut out your desired handle shape. You can be creative and make the handle as big or small as you’d like. You could also experiment with unique shapes.

Attach the handle using tooth picks. Of course you can’t pick it up by the handle, its for looks only.
